Web 2.0 - Does this actually work? Check the stats and decide…

By Clive | January 3, 2008

Hi Webels,
My last campaign (go have a look for recent stats) and the previous one (ditto) were interesting and, in my own way, I’m checking out what’s working and what’s not.

Big News….

Howie Schwarz’s ‘Conversation Domination Membership’ - originally only available for a one-off payment of $1200. Which later became the ‘easy pay’ option of $195 per month and has now evolved into the $1 ‘free’ trial. Methinks you’re milking this one a bit overtly Howie :-) - can’t say I blame you as it’s all good info and as long as those first punters don’t object why should I ?

Still, if I had 400 people sign up at the original fee and a few dozen more later at the ‘easy pay’ option I’d be happy. Ecstatic even! Well done Howie - gotta be worth half a million right? It’s all envy from my end.

I really appreciate Howie’s insight that started me off on my little Webel adventure but my blog remains free. I’m not stealing Howie’s stuff and republishing it - I didn’t sign up - but what I am doing, I hope, is blazing my own little Web 2.0 trail.

But wait: [added 8th Jan]

Now Stompernet are laying the groundwork to promote their very own Web 2.0 course/membership whatever and no doubt that too will be somewhat pricey too. I admit that their video production values ( see below) are high but everything in this video is what we know already, still if you needed further convincing……

(Update: 03/04/08 - Stompernet have taken the video down as they’re sold out, way to go!)
.
PS: Have you noticed the big ‘thing’ for Internet Marketers in the last year, and will continue this year, is to find 1000 punters willing to pay $1000 rather than 10,000 for a $100 product! It’s a less hassle way to a million bucks apparently - so that’s OK then! As the video states, in 1997 you could get it ALL for $9.99 !!!
.
It’s the new Guru strategy :-D
.
PPS: I just found that the domain www.GurusGoHome.com is up for grabs! A marketing opportunity for someone there I reckon!

But there is good fair priced info out there if you know where to look….

I’m currently checking out Jack Humphrey’s new membership site that, as far as I’m concerned, is cutting edge and way, way, WAY better value at $29.95 a month. How can any serious marketer turn down a 3 day $1 trial via Paypal to check it out? Not me and I like what I’ve found so far.

Web Site Marketing Strategies - Web 2.0 Style

By Clive | December 16, 2007

Ok good people, here are the results of my most recent campaign. For future reference let’s refer to it as Campaign #4.

First let me say that the KWP was a ‘long tail’ 3 word phrase that looked promising and which I researched using the free Webel Tool and also the paid for Adwords Analyzer but they both confirmed the fact that there were lot of searches for this KWP with relatively little competition.

The campaign’s Day #1 was the 6th of December and my last push/post/blog etc. was made on the 13th. So it was a 7 day Kwik Hit using the Webel Way,

Mostly each blog (blogr, wordpress, zimbio etc.) had just the one post. I didn’t go back and add more content.

The Social Bookmarking site posts were not ‘buzzed up‘ by friends and, as far as I could tell, just retained 1 vote each i.e. mine.

I made my post or uploaded the video (a really crappy one which was just a Camtasia selection of screenshots of my target site with my redirect www. on it.) No voice-over just a bit of music. Rubbish essentially!

Lastly the affiliate program was ’slightly’ (and I mean VERY slightly) adult in content so I put a parental rating on my Squidoo lens. Probably a mistake as Squidoo hasn’t shown up at all in my rankings. This is unusual as in past campaigns I’ve found Squidoo to be a slow starter but a good ’stayer’- slowly but surely moving up from page #5 to page #1.

As promised I’ve put the results into a .pdf file (which I ask you not to share with anyone) which makes for easier reading as there’s a fair amount of info in there.

Essentially this is my daily To Do list and colorizing it, as I have, helps me as I go along each day and I hope this will make it easier for you to read too and spot some trends and so on,

So, not only are the results in there but also underneath them are my daily lists of sites that I joined/created or uploaded to for this campaign. I admit to jumping around some on occasion. If I was in ‘video mode‘ on Day #3 I might also upload Day #4 videos and not create a Wetpaint account that day but put it off ’til I was feeling more creative, text-wise.

I do try and vary the text on all the various blog type sites. Is that really necessary? I somehow doubt it, but I do want the one sentence that appears in the S.E. results to look different for each ranking.

Download the Zip file here which contains both a .pdf of the results and the Word file should you want to edit it and use as your own template for your next campaign

I’ll be doing an in-depth analysis of this little campaign and post it here in a few days but it’s interesting, is it not, just casting an eye over the document?

You can quickly see what sites hit page #1 fast and then disappear (ClipMarks for example or Flickr in Google) and how Yahoo likes certain sites and MSN others. Google changes daily, Yahoo stays static for longer, MSN seems a slow learner :-)

Some well dodgy (i.e. questionable) video sites such as Str8up.com do well too - over and above some of the more usual and expected ones. Even MSN like them!

But, talking of MSN, don’t be tempted to write them off from the results you see for this campaign.

Why? Because I did a quick check on my last campaign (6 weeks after it finished) to see how the rankings were holding up and, frankly, was prepared to be disapointed.

Not only was I pleased to find that I still had 50% placement on Google page #1 and 30% on Yahoo but also 90% on MSN page #1. Yes really 90%! Go check it out (remember the page you are going to has been edited and re-edited as time has passed so the most recent info is at the bottom of the post).

Exciting times eh?

Have a great Christmas and let’s hope that, web-wise, we all have a very cool and profitable New Year!

See you up there,

Merry, merry,
